Book Review Eat to Live, by Dr. Mehmet Oz

Hailed a "medical breakthrough" by Dr. Mehmet Oz, EAT TO LIVE offers a highly effective, scientifically proven way to lose weight quickly. The key to Dr. Joel Fuhrman's revolutionary six-week plan is simple: health = nutrients / calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories in the food you eat is high, you lose weight. The more nutrient-dense food you eat, the less you crave fat, sweets, and high-caloric foods. EAT TO LIVE has been revised to include inspiring success stories from people who have used the program to lose shockingly large amounts of weight and recover from life-threatening illnesses; Dr. Fuhrman's nutrient density index; up-to-date scientific research supporting the principles behind Dr. Fuhrman's plan; new recipes and meal ideas; and much more. This easy-to-follow, nutritionally sound diet can help anyone shed pounds quickly-and keep them off. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly In this new edition, which incorporates the latest scientific nutritional data, Fuhrman's restrictive diet plan is designed for clinically overweight people who suffer from a spectrum of lifestyle/obesity-induced conditions like diabetes and heart disease and need to drop a significant amount of weight fast—about 20 pounds in the first six weeks. The basis of Fuhrman's program is Nutrient Density, expressed by the simple formula health equals nutrients divided by calories. Fuhrman's "secret" to optimum health and permanent weight control is giving the body only what it needs. An aggressive six-week vegetarian plan segues into a regimen that includes a limited amount of animal products, like lean fish or egg whites once a week. Although proven and sound, this guidebook is not for someone who wants to lose those last 10 pounds or fit into her wedding dress; this is a serious undertaking for dieters whose umpteen previous efforts have failed and whose health is endangered. (Feb.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved. --This text refers to the Paperback edition. From Booklist Americans spend more than $40 billion annually on diets and weight-reducing programs, many of which work temporarily, fail, or may be dangerous. Fuhrman’s nutrient-packed, healthful approach to nutrition combined with quick weight loss can be expressed in this equation, health=nutrients intake/calories intake. The more nutrient-heavy the intake, the less caloric and more healthy it is. Encouraging, engaging personal stories from Fuhrman’s treatment of over more than 10,000 patients demonstrate his supposition that eating ever-larger portions of healthful, high-nutrient foods decreases desire for low-nutrient foods, loosening their addictive hold on people. Pictures work effectively in this newly revised update of a nutrition-weight control classic. Drawings show, for instance, the stomach-filling efficiency of 400 calories of high-nutrition intake versus 400 calories of high-fat and oil consumption, which leaves a nearly empty stomach hungry. With FAQs, glossary, end notes, and an index for user friendliness. Pass the eggplant! --Whitney Scott --This text refers to the Paperback edition. Review As a physician myself, I am concerned that this misinformation may harm other people by preventing them from reading Dr. Fuhrman's important book - I am especially concerned about our American epidemic of obesity and diet-related diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Fuhrman presents the cure in his well-researched book. In his menu plans he gives 7 days of menu plans for those on a vegetarian version of the plan and 7 days on a non-vegetarian plan. Dr. Fuhrman also makes it clear that a diet rich in vegetables does not have to be all raw or exclude animal foods completely; it is flexible. As a physician, I have observed him in action with patients and he can modify recipes and menu plans to accommodate various tastes and food preferences. It is not an all or nothing plan. However, without reading Eat To Live, your future diet-style will be based on misinformation, not science. It takes experience, creativity and knowledge to make the healthiest way to eat taste favorable for many people. Some people will reject the idea of eating for health based on incomplete information and what they want to eat based on short term thinking (those french fries sound good), rather than enjoying truly more delicious foods that are actually healthful too. Just remember taste is learned and takes a few months to adjust and you can also learn to make healthy food taste great. I have observed that most people over time actually like the taste of this diet-style better then their prior one and love the fact they can eat as much as they want. You get to eat lots of food, not be hungry and get great results too. Get the book and see for yourself. I believe every person in America must read this information; it puts all controversy about diet to rest and may save your life. --bretandanna I've studied Dr. McDougall's, Maximum Weight Loss program and I've studied Dr. Fuhrman's. Superficially, they may seem the same, since they both include virtually the same foods. However, fundamentally they are different. If someone was to ask me what the differences are, I would say the following: McDougall's program places starches at the base of the pyramid and vegetables, secondary, whereas Fuhrman place's vegetables, especially greens at the base. Starches are secondary. Further, Fuhrman encourages fruit consumption whereas, McDougall limits fruits. I would guess that Fuhrman's claims that his diet is a prophylaxes and advances health is sound in light of the science that supports it. In addition, if you want to lose weight rapidly, with Fuhrman, you will. With McDougall, your weight loss will be much slower and you'll never be hungry. You won't be hungry with Fuhrman either, but you have to dedicate yourself to eating more vegetables and limited starches. Regarding nutrition and weight loss, I'm deeply interested in separating fact from fiction, and good science from pseudoscience. I have also spent many hours reading other websites and books by M.D.s and it takes awhile to get it Dr. Fuhrman is the only one who in the best scientific tradition is courageous enough to admit when he doesn't know something, as well as expressing doubt when he isn't sure, because he's aware that knowledge is only tentative and facts should be revised when new information becomes available. However, when he is sure which he derives from good science, he tells you. Dr. Fuhrman the only one I trust in the nutrition field because he's so damn sincere, caring, honest and free of hype. --Philip Marmaros I have read literally hundreds of nutrition books. I have been confused recently by many of the popular diet books like Atkins, South Beach Diet, and No-Grain Diet, as they made sense to me yet when I tried to eat this way I felt horrible. I had previously lost a great deal of weight eating raw food at a raw food retreat, but could not keep up this way of eating in the real world. I really didn't know what to do, except to keep searching and trying new things. Then, over the last three days, I read Eat to Live. This book answered all of the questions I had about the popular diet programs. It showed me a practical way that I could integrate my belief in and my success with raw foods into a healthy eating plan that I could follow for the rest of my life (although Eat to Live incorporates all types of healthy foods, not just raw foods). It explained why so many studies on nutrition seemingly contradict one another. Everything the author says is backed up with research from peer-reviewed journals. It is the solution I have been waiting for, not just to my weight problem (I still have about 50 pounds to lose) but to my health problems, and for my lifestyle in general. I hope to follow this way of eating for the rest of my life. I am very excited because the author has extremely simple recipes (the book is mostly informative, though, not mostly recipes like some diet books). He also explains how this can be followed with a harried and hectic lifestyle or while traveling. The author promotes nothing that has not been studied extensively in the medical literature, making this book very appealing to physicians and others in the medical field. It is technical, so it is good for people familiar with scientific study and medical terminology; however, someone wanting the basic message of the book can skip over these parts and figure out how to do the eating plan very easily. I am just the type of person who wants to understand WHY everything is done and WHY I should modify parts of my diet, so for me this book was a breath of fresh air moving through my life, showing me what I needed to know and what I need to do. For those who choose to follow the diet and want extensive support, the author provides this, too, via his website---from low-cost ways to more costly one-on-one support. However, unlike many other diet books, the author does not set himself up as a diet guru, nor does he bad-mouth other diet book authors when he critiques their programs. One gets the feeling that he wrote the book truly to help people improve their health. This book was an answer to prayer for me, and I thank God that the author wrote it. --O. Brown --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. As an advocate of diets rich in a vast array of plant micronutrients per calorie, his ANDI scoring system, (featured in Whole Foods Market) has directed millions of consumers to eat an anti-cancer diet-style . Dr. Fuhrman's discoveries in differentiating the physiology and biochemistry of true hunger from addictive hunger (which he calls toxic hunger) is essential for understanding and resolving both health and weight concerns, and an essential element to solve our nation's obesity and health crisis. Dr. Fuhrman is the Research Director of the Nutritional Research Foundation, a member of the Whole Foods Market Scientific Advisory Board and a member of the Dr. Oz Show Medical Advisory Board. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1988) and has received the St. Joseph's Family Practice Resident's Teaching Award for his contribution to the education of residents. Along with his nutritional expertise, Dr. Fuhrman has been involved professionally with sports medical committees, advised professional and Olympic athletes, and has lectured to athletic trainers and world-class athletes for maximizing performance and preventing injury. Judi's review My daughter heard of this book from a friend who used this diet and swears he cured his heart disease. I take a lot of medication for Congestive heart failure so thought I would give it a try. The diet is pretty restrictive but I did not have a lot of trouble with it as I already eat low calorie, lots of vegetables, oatmeal. I also did not need to lose a lot of weight so the diet is designed to lose weight fast. I think I feel a lot better though and after six weeks of this diet I lost ten pounds. I don't know how it would be for someone who had a lot of weight to lose. I think I would feel cheated on this diet if I had stuck to it completely but I took a cheat day each week where I ate whatever I wanted which always boils down to fish and chips made with halibut. or Pizza I love Red Lobsters Lobster Pizza. What do you eat? Breakfast consisted of a bunch of fruit or some oatmeal a few times a week. Lunch was pretty much always an enormous salad. Dinner varied and I learned to cook a lot of different things and make extra for leftovers. I'd usually have a small(er) side salad, some sort of main entree (beans, mushrooms, some sort of fat free sauce), and some more veggies. You're allowed a little bit of bread now and then (as well as some starchy vegetables) so I never got massive carb cravings or anything. Do you get enough nutrients? Yes. This was a big eye opener for me, but I never realized how much protein is actually in vegetables. Calorie for calorie, vegetables have WAY more protein than meat. That is why you have to eat huge salads though, you need to eat more to get the same amount of protein in chicken or steak, for instance. I ended up getting a lot of my recipes online through google searches for "eat to live recipes". Since I usually eat a lot of soups and salads anyway this fit my life style. I totally recommend this book to anyone wanting to eat healthy. He has a few more books out there am going to order a couple more. Tips to Lose Weight by Changing Your Life Style Not Dieting.

So you want to lose a few pounds and your friends all say “that is easy, just eat less and exercise more.” But anyone who has tried to lose a few pounds will tell you it is not easy. Eat less and the hunger over takes you. Exercise more and work out hard and then the hunger attacks you. Well here are some tips I gathered along the diet trail. Eat hot soup before a meal. It probably has to do with you can eat soup fast and your body is registering satisfied before you even begin the meal. So now you have had your soup try eating a hot pepper laced avocado before that meal as an appetizer. Or sprinkle hot peppers on a tomato for an appetizer. This seems to suppress your appetite and help you to shed the pounds. Walk to do your errands. Like I do Ebay so have to go to the post office daily while really I don't I choose to do this because of the exercise. The post office is only three blocks away but round trip that is six blocks. When I add a trip to the store it gets up to a mile. I live in a low rise building only three floors but when going to see my friends I always take the stairs. More calories burned. This simple trick to fast weight loss is to eat at least 2 apples a day at different times. You can eat it before meals and/or eat it as snacks. Add 2 Grapefruit to the diet and this will take care of your need for so many helpings of fruit a day. It will also keep you from eating unhealthy snacks. Apples and Grapefruit are both very filling too. Yup, you read that right. According to research from Penn State, eating bigger portions of food will help you feel fuller longer. The catch: You want to fill up healthier stuff, like fruits and veggies. So a massive salad is good; Eating more fruit like above is really good too. I like fruit salad so that is a good thing. Both eating more and eating more often keeps you full longer and so you don't get really hungry and overeat. Have three healthy meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, this will give you sustained nutrients and energy for the day, keep hunger pangs at bay. Choose unprocessed, low sugar snacks such as a small handful of unsalted nuts, hummus with carrot and celery sticks or oat cakes. Stop counting calories. Listen to your body rather than count the calories, eat slowly and stop eating when you stop feeling hungry, keep portion sizes under control – meals shouldn’t be larger than your cupped hands put together. Your stomach is only around the size of your fist! Eat protein every meal and snack . Protein is essential for the body to grow and repair, it also keeps you feeling fuller for longer keeping hunger pangs at bay - leaving you less tempted to snack. Choose protein-rich fish, chicken and lean meats or beans, pulses and nuts with your meals and snacks. Get enough Sleep studies show that people who get enough sleep lose weight. This is because you tend to try and fix that low energy with food. So sleep at least 6 to 8 hours a night. Eat more brown everything or whole wheat. Eat less processed foods. In general, the less processed a food is, the slower it takes to digest, and the longer it keeps you feeling satisfied and full If you allow yourself occasional indulgences, you are less likely to feel deprived -- and more likely to stick with your diet. So take at least one day off from your diet every week. Have a cheat day. When dining out, ask a dining partner to share a large meal or ask for a to-go box and put away the second portion for tomorrow's lunch Drink Water or Water flavored with lime or lemon. Skip all those sugary drinks they add enough calories in one sitting as you should have all week. So stick to water, or unsweetened ice tea. Juice it is a good way to lose weight. Pick a wide range of colors in fruits and vegetables so you are getting a good range of vitamins and minerals. Try using a high power blender rather than a juicer to juice you veggies and fruit. It will leave the fiber in and that is one thing that keeps you full. Think lifestyle change, not short-term diet. Permanent weight loss is not something that a “quick-fix” diet can achieve. Instead, think about weight loss as a permanent lifestyle change—a commitment to your health for life. Various popular diets can help jumpstart your weight loss, but permanent changes in your lifestyle and food choices are what will work in the long run. Keep a food journal, I keep mine online. It not only helps me track calories but what I need to be mindful of as far as vitamins and minerals. It even tracks those in with my multiple vitamin. I also can keep it on my phone, plus it keeps track of exercise even like my trip to the post office. It also makes me aware of what I am eating. It also makes me aware of how to add just a little exercise a day. Try some of these suggestions and you will find yourself a whole lot lighter without dieting. Judi Singleton ownsBe Jewel U
